Scottsdale neighbors upset about having sober living home next door – ABC15 Arizona

“If Mesa, Gilbert, and all these other cities are [regulating sober living facilities], I think Scottsdale needs to be aware of the problem,” [neighbor] Laura Foster said.

Neighbors who spoke to ABC15 said those living at the home had been pretty quiet, but said they were concerned about the problems that could occur and the city’s lack of ability to regulate such facilities.

The City of Scottsdale doesn’t “lack the ability to regulate” sober living facilities any more than Mesa and Gilbert do. Scottsdale’s government leaders simply haven’t done it.

Sober living facilities are a business. The issue here is not the nobility of helping recovering addicts, alcoholics, etc. It’s about balancing risk (the denial of which is patently unfounded) to the neighboring residents against the business interests of the facility owners.

No one is “entitled” to conduct business at the expense of others, and no one suffering the expense is less worthy of consideration just because they object.
