Scottsdale’s “Museum of the West” has thus far soaked up about $10 million in taxpayer funding, not including free land. Repeated objections to Mayor Jim Lane and the City Council about wildly optimistic attendance projections fell on deaf ears. Now, following the precedent established by the city’s contract with the Scottsdale Cultural Council, the public is apparently not entitled to know how many people have actually visited the MotW.
[Museum director Mike] Fox refused to provide overall attendance figures, saying such numbers fail to capture the museum’s full mission. When the museum opened last year, officials said they expected between 87,000 and 118,000 annual visitors.
