McClellan: You want us to approve Prop. 123 as GOP bills attack Arizona public schools?

During the recession, [the Republicans] illegally stopped funding a voter-approved inflation fund for schools.

And when sued and lost, they appealed, using more taxpayer funds.

Even their settlement — in the form of Prop 123 — is only 75 percent of what they owe to schools, and the funding lasts for only 10 years.

According to their own Joint Legislative Budget Committee, when inflation is taken into account, the Republicans actually provide less per pupil funding to public schools than they did seven years ago.

To echo Mel Melvis’s comment on this column, our so-called Republican governor and legislature are simply accelerating liquidation of assets that in essence already belong to AZ public schools, in order to make up for money that the Republicans just plain stole from public schools.
