One wonders if it would have happened had Secretary of State Michele Reagan spent more time overseeing this election and less time lobbying the Legislature to open the floodgates to more dark money and other campaign-finance “reforms.”
I’m surprised that Laurie Roberts didn’t also note that our state legislature mandated a few years ago that municipalities conduct their elections in the fall to align with state and federal elections ‘as a cost saving measure.’ So why are we even having an election of any kind in May?
My guess? The pre-emption of municipal elections provided a clear advantage to the Republican Party in cities like Scottsdale, which flipped from an historic 4-3 R-D split to 100% R, and has remained that way ever since.
But when it comes time to scamming the taxpayers, the Republican-dominated legislature found it advantageous to do it with an off-cycle election.
