“[AZ Governor Doug Ducey’s comment suggesting there is a correlation between low-income areas and parents who “don’t care” about their children] shows he has a fundamental misunderstanding on what it takes to educate children. He needs to stop looking for excuses for why he’s not properly funding education,” [District 27 Rep. Rebecca] Rios said.
[District 24 Sen. Katie] Hobbs added that the governor’s assessment that Arizona’s top-ranked high schools can be a model for other schools is “either delusional or disingenuous” because the schools are BASIS charter schools.
“They get their success by expelling kids who aren’t performing at the high level they demand,” said Hobbs. “That model is not sustainable on a statewide level because district public schools don’t have the luxury of picking and choosing who they educate.”
